The Social
Action Committee is currently considering the topic of
sustainability and related Social Action Initiatives. A
definition of sustainability was created in 1987 at the
World Commission on Environment and Development as, “Development
that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs.”
On November 14, 2009 The Social Action Committee invited
Dr. Mark Parent to speak at the EVBA fall meeting on
the topic of sustainability. Referencing Genesis
1:26-28, Genesis 2 and Romans 8:18-22 he discussed and
facilitated group work on the following points:
• Human complicity (sinfulness) in the state of the
environment – There are limits we must be cognizant of.
• Our values should not be limited to consumerism – man
was made for worship not for shopping.
• There is life beyond our life – creation is in
relationship to God.
• The Gospel message is hope for all creation not just
humankind.
